Iceland MotoPark kart circuit gets CiK-FIA design approval

The CiK-FIA, the governing body of International Karting motor sport, today issued design approval for the kart circuit homologation design dossier issued by Apex Circuit Design Ltd. for the Iceland MotoPark.
Laurent Arnaud, the Head of the CIK-FIA Technical Department, said in his formal written approval of the homologation dossier; ‘We have received an excellent dossier for the Iceland MotoPark kart circuit. This seems a very good project …I wish you all the best for this fantastic project’.
Max Mosley, the FIA President, has endorsed his support for the Iceland MotoPark project in a letter to Vilhjalmur Vilhjalmsson, the Iceland MotoPark Managing Director, and said; ‘[the Iceland MotoPark] seems a very laudable project and, subject to the usual technical requirements, has our unqualified support’, he added; ‘your project addresses some FIA strategic objectives’ ‘we are glad to endorse your initiatives’.
The Iceland MotoPark kart circuit will be the first motorsport facility to be built on the Iceland MotoPark’s exciting and innovative 370-hectare multi-use parkland development near Reykjanesbæ in Iceland which aims to have a carbon-neutral footprint and is located near the capital of Reykjavik. Conditional upon receipt of planning approval, the Iceland MotoPark kart circuit is scheduled to commence build early in 2007. The project site will, soon after construction of the Iceland MotoPark kart circuit, include other World-class motorsport facilities including a Category 2 FIA race circuit. The project has been developed by Toppurinn, an Icelandic construction and development company with support from a team of World-class design and consultancy specialists and partners.
The Iceland MotoPark kart circuit will be 1.2km in length, have 15 corners and has been expressly designed to accommodate the varying needs of a World Championship destination and a World Class entertainment and leisure karting facility.
The Apex Circuit Design Ltd. team, who designed the Iceland MotoPark kart circuit, coordinated the thoughts of the client, the Icelandic kart and racing driver Viktor Jensen, racing teams and the CiK-FIA into a sequence of undulating corners and straights that should provide good racing, good spectating and safe use for drivers of all abilities. Apex worked with the internationally-renowned architects HOK Sport Architecture to develop a landmark building facility for the kart and extreme sports activity centre positioned adjacent to the circuit.
Clive Bowen, Managing Director of Apex Circuit Design Ltd., today said ‘the formal acknowledgement and approval by the CiK-FIA of our team’s work is, of course, a pleasure to receive and we enthusiastically look forward to the commencement of construction following planning approval’
Vilhjalmur Vilhjalmsson, Managing Director of the Iceland MotoPark also commented; ‘we’ve achieved a huge amount with the project development so far; we already have outline agreements with a hotel operator, a retail park operator, commitments to build hundreds of homes, commercial developments and even a university campus; the kart circuit will be our first operational component on the site and we are so looking forward to delivering on our promises to our clients and partners’.
