New Circuit for Far-Eastern Russia

The Primring project was started in 2010 by Sumotori Machinery Group, partly in response to a request from the Vladivostok city authorities to develop infrastructure and sporting destinations to coincide with the hosting by Russia of the APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation) Forum in 2012. The site has been acquired on the mainland of Primorsky, one of Russia’s easternmost regions, and an initial schematic design was prepared in 2010 by the German design consultancy, Tilke GmbH and subsequent scheme design development and detailed engineering undertaken by Apex, with support from our partners at Ridge and URS Scott Wilson and the client technical team.

The Primring will be a modern leisure, retail and sporting destination and will also be home to a technological campus for training athletes, engineers and racing drivers. The goal being to assist in developing motor sport talent in Russia in tandem with initiatives by the Russian ASN, the RAF, and its regional member, the PAF. The proximity of Vladivostok to Japan, South Korea and China will have a considerable influence on the development of motor sport at the Primring as the East Asian motor sport ‘scene’ is closer than any other Russian race facility.

The Apex master plan design includes 5 separate motor sport centres, able to accommodate 7 motor sport disciplines; the main FIA Circuit alone is able to offer 8 track permutations, with a variety of combinations of simultaneous operation.

Design work on the main circuit was completed in April 2011 and approval was granted in May 2011 by the FIA Circuits Commission for the Grade 2 track design.

The award of a Facility Improvement Programme (FIP) grant by the FIA Institute for Motor Sport Safety and Sustainability provided a mechanism for Sumotori to identify land use adjacent to the central race facilities that should enhance commercial and environmental sustainability.

This project has great momentum and phase 1 funding is in place; an FIM compliant Motocross facility has now been built and hosted its first regional event in early October 2011.
