Alabama Motorsports Park gets Permit

Following months of planning the new Alabama Motorsports Park has taken a step closer to coming into existence. The US Army Corps of Engineers granted a permit to the project after it found "no significant impacts to the environment."

The permit allows the $625 million project to progress near Prichard, Alabama. It is to be a Dale Earnhardt Jr Speedway and will feature a 1-mile asphalt oval speedway, a 1/4 mile drag strip, a 3/8 mile dirt track, kart track, a motorcross circuit, retail and commercial areas and a 3 mile road course.

English firm Apex Circuit Design, also responsible for the Dubai Autodrome, undertook a masterplanning excercise for the facility in 2007, which included the design of the road course and FIA-CiK approved kart track.

The course will provide an opportunity for world class racing and for corporate activities to take place, allowing a wide selection of people to enjoy the facility. It is scheduled to be operational by 2010.
