Construction starts at Iceland MotoPark Kart circuit

Iceland Motopark Following receipt of planning consent from the Reykjanesbaer authorities to commence groundworks and construction, the Iceland MotoPark kart circuit saw the commencement of works onsite on March 1st 2007 by Jardvelar, one of Iceland’s foremost road construction companies.

The northern sector of the Phase One development of the Iceland MotoPark is being developed first and, to ensure commercial viability to cover the capital costs associated with the motorsport elements, a commercial parcelisation plan has been issued; marketing of these plots started on the same day that the kart circuit construction commenced.

The process of construction for the Iceland MotoPark kart circuit is anticipated to take up to six months and the initial works will include the removal of topsoil and extraction of aggregate for roads construction onsite. Groundworks and infrastructure construction will follow prior to the construction of the track itself. As the kart circuit is to occupy land where rock has been extracted, the circuit itself will be set below ground level by 3 – 5 metres, providing ideal views for spectators and providing a degree of shelter for kart operations for those days when a cold wind blows.

Clive Bowen of Apex Circuit Design Ltd., the circuit designer, was in Iceland this week with one of his engineering team members to oversee the commencement of works and to provide technical input to the contractors, Jardvelar EHF. On seeing the works activity he said: ‘this is an important day for the Iceland MotoPark. We’ve come a very long way over the past year in developing the idea of a commercially viable and socially responsible development for Iceland; we’ve secured the services of the best road constructor in the region and I’m most impressed at the pace of work’.

Vilhjalmur Vilhjalmsson, Managing Director of the Iceland MotoPark was also present and said; our companies, Toppurinn and Jardvelar, have established a strategic partnership to develop the Iceland MotoPark and we’re so pleased to demonstrate that our commitment to deliver a fully operational kart facility this summer is on schedule. We’ve attracted a huge amount of interest from commercial land users and, in fact, now have the first anchor tenants in place who will be building on our site. We expect to shortly announce our partners to develop and subsequently operate the landmark hotel and we hope soon also to announce plans for our retail park project’.
